Distractions Happen

The third of Remi's Rules for Success is that distractions happen. I have been living that rule lately. It is mid August and it is hot at work. When I get home I have little energy for much of anything including writing my second book, Learning to Walk. On the weekends, there are family commitments, the never ending house project list, spending time with the important people in my life, relaxing, and having some fun. When will I find time to write?

Time is a funny thing. A lot of people, including me, say they don't have enough time to do this or do that. That isn't really true. How we spend our time is really a reflection on what we value. That is what we spend our time on. I heard a story of a business man who told his son he didn't have time to play catch because he had to prepare for an important meeting the next day. His son went outside to play and came in half an hour later holding his broken arm. His dad rushed him to the hospital. The man didn't find "extra" time to take care of his son. His son's injury was just more important than his presentation.
One of the things I talk about in the next book is finding your 'why' of doing something. Without a good 'why' you will have a hard time finding the time to accomplish any really great thing. I have several 'whys' for writing Learning to Walk. I wrote them down and posted them on the wall above my desk at home. I use them to remind myself that it will be worth it to finish writing this book, then the next book and the next book...
In Remi's world, all you have to do when distractions happen is regain your focus and continue pursuing your goal as soon as possible. My goal is to finish writing my next book by the end of the summer which is a month away. Writing this blog post is a good first step toward writing more. I will follow my own advice, read my 'whys' every day, and continue writing.
